Robert Downey Jr., who was born on April 10th, 1965, in Manhattan NY, to actor parents Robert Downey Sr. & Elsie Ann (nee Ford), has been married three times. He was raised in Los Angeles, California.
Downey’s father was of partially Irish descent, while his mother was of English ancestry and Scottish descent. Downey’s paternal grandfather, John Joseph Downey, was of Italian descent.
His parents divorced when he was four years old; his father moved out of the house shortly thereafter. After his divorce, Downey lived with his mother and stepfather, Jack Ford, whom she married in 1958. In 1966, Downey’s mother remarried actor Charles Durning.
In 1969, Downey’s mother died of cancer, at age 27. She left behind her son and daughter from her previous marriage, Michelle and Charlie, respectively. Downey’s stepfather, Jack Ford died three months later.
After his mother’s death, Downey’s father took up drinking heavily. By 1977, Downey’s father was living in a homeless shelter. At the same time, Downey’s older brother, Charlie, was diagnosed with schizophrenia.
During this period, Downey’s father worked sporadically as a stuntman, carpenter, and painter. He also directed several low-budget horror movies under the name Charles B. Pierce.
In 2008, Downey starred in two commercially and critically successful films, Iron Man and Tropic Thunder. He played Tony Stark/Iron Man in Robert Downey Jr.’s debut role as the titular character in the superhero film Iron Man, directed by Jon Favreau.
